[Music | Mai Kuraki]

Introduction:

Kuraki Mai was born on October 28th 1982. As a child she used to watch Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston on TV and wanted to be like them: singing and dancing in front of many people. While in the second grade of Junior High, Mai made a demo tape of her singing. When she went to High School, she was introduced to the staff of her present recording company GIZA studios. In 1999, Mai recorded her first US single “Baby I Like it” at the Boston Cybersound recording studio, and it was released later that year in October, under the name “Mai K”. On December 8th, Mai lauched her debut in Japan with the single “Love, Day After Tomorrow”.

Her first album “Delicious Way” sold more than a million copies, and was number one in the Oricon charts. Additionally, she was featured in her own TV show called “Mai-K TV” in 2000. Her second album “Prefect Crime” sold two million copies, and in the summer of 2001 Mai also started her first live tour, visiting 6 Japanese cities. In 2002, she made her first English album called “Secret of My Heart”. In October of that year, her third album “FAIRY TALE” was also released in Japan on Mai’s 20th birthday. Mai’s fourth album “If I Believe” and fifth album “Wish You the Best” both attained the number one spot in the Oricon charts, but did not sell as much as her first two albums.

Mai has a large number of fans in both Japan and America, and was one of the few artists that could compete with Utada Hikaru in the charts back in 1999. She is now GIZA’s best selling Japanese artist, and still one of Japan’s top performers. Her latest single, Love, needing, went on sale January 26th of 2005.
