Millennial Fair – Faye Wong

Introduction:

Faye Wong is a legend in the Chinese music Industry and the most succesful Asian music star of the nineties. Faye was born in Beijing China in 1969, her mother was a singer as well and her father worked as mining engineer. In 1987, Faye and her parents moved to Hong Kong, where she took singing lessons from a renowned teacher.

Her teacher introduced Faye to Cinepoly records, where she started her first career as singer. Cinepoly assigned her an english name: Shirley, and her first three albums were made under that name. However, Faye realised that she was being used by Cinepoly as a marketing tool, and she was forced to sing songs she didn’t like.

And thus Faye left Hong Kong and went to New York. She had lost herself and wanted to revive her personality. Faye returned to Hong Kong after several months and publised her Coming Home album as a turning point in her career. With the new stage name Faye Wong, she was able to take control of her career. She could write her own songs and was no longer bound by restrictions of others.

Faye flourished during the mid–nineties, and produced many albums. In 1997, Faye left Cinepoly and joined up with EMI (the same record company as Utada Hikaru). In 1998, Faye Wong graced the American and European fans with her internationally acclaimed song: Eyes On Me, recorded on the soundtrack of the immensely popular Final Fantasy VIII.

Her casual and friendly demeanor earned her the respect of other Chinese stars such as Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Na Ying, with who she also did several duets and live performance acts. She does not see herself as superstar, however others tend to disagree. Faye even made the Guinness Book of World Records for selling the most CDs in Hong Kong ever, as female artist. Her music style and always–changing appearance style has capitivated millions of fans around the world.

Faye was married to the rock star Dou Wei (竇唯) and also bore a daughter, Dou Yin Tong (窦音彤), she devorced him and is still single, altough rumors about her relationship with actor Nicolas Tse are still abundant as ever. She moved back to Beijing and has promised her fans new albums. Aside from her music career, Faye also made her appearances on television in movies such as Chunking Express (1994) and Okinawa Rendez-vous.
