 Van Fanel (Top)

Guymelef piloted: Escaflowne
Intro: Van is the very young king of Fanelia. Both his father and mother died when he was at
the age of 5, thus leading to his older brother, Volkan, being next in line to the thrown. However,
in order to become King of Fanelia, one first has to slay one of the mystical Dragon’s
surrounding the spectacular kingdom. Volkan did indeed face a Dragon, but never did he return, and it
is now known that he went on to serve that of the Zaibach Empire. Van’s mother was of a race of
people called the Ryujinbuto. This spectacular race were identical to that of ordinary beings, save
that they could grow angel like wings, something that Van also has the ability to do. Van is
extremely skilled in sword fighting and Guymelef combat, a skill he was taught by the legendary
swordsman Balgus. Once Van reached the age of 15, he went on his quest to defeat a Dragon in order to
become the King of Fanelia, just like his brother once did, but unlike his brother, Van did succeed
in this task, despite it leading him to more he had ever thought possible...
 Hitomi Kamazaki (Top)
Age: 15

Guymelef piloted: None
Intro: Hitomi is an inhabitant of the planet earth. She is in her first year of high school
and lives with that of her mother, father and younger brother. She is well known in her school due to
her abilities in athletics and her extraordinary skill in telling fortunes with tarot cards. After
taking part in a track race after school, Hitomi is unexpectedly transported to a far away planet
called Gaia with the young King of Fanelia, Van Fanel. Once on the planet, Hitomi unintentionally
becomes a key role in the forthcoming war of the planet and is able to foresee the future with
frightening accuracy due to a pendant her late grandmother gave to her, which seems to have a
connection to that of the Guymelef Escaflowne, which Van pilots. With the ability to foresee the
future, Hitomi becomes essential to Van’s quest and the future of Gaia and although she is reluctant
to remain on this mystical planet at first, she soon finds many reasons to do so.
 Allen Schezar (Top)
Age: 21
Kingdom Served: Astoria
Guymelef piloted: Scherazade
Intro:Allen has absolutely no’one left in his family. His father left his mother and
younger sister when he was just a boy. His younger sister, Serena, disappeared when he was at the age
of 11, and his mother past away some time after her daughter’s disappearance. After all his
great losses, Allen became a bandit, and a skilled one at that, until he tried his skills upon the
legendary swordsman, Balgus (the teacher of Van, although he taught Allen before Van). Balgus saw the
obvious skill and potential in Allen and decided to take him in as his student. This enabled Allen to
become one of the greatest swordsman in the whole of Gaia and he changed his ways and became a loyal
knight of Atoria. However, Allen was never given an important post despite his enormous skill, but
his ordinary life with his loyal followers all changes once he is paid a visit by Van and Hitomi...
 Merle (Top)
Age: 11
Kingdom Served: Fanelia
Guymelef piloted: None
Intro: Merle is of a race that consists of being half human and half cat, which results in
people of her race being called “cat girls” if female like herself. When she was a mere
child, she was orphaned by that of her parents but was taken in by the inhabitants of Fanelia.
Although she appears to be just a simple cat girl, she grew to be Van’s best friend throughout
her time living in Fanelia, something which is very rare for Van, being the seemingly cold person he
is. Van considers Merle as a part of his family; a little sister if you will, despite her loving him
in a whole different way. This leads to the jealousy Merle has towards Hitomi when she first comes to
the world of Gaia, and her often teasing “girl from the mystic moon”, but Merle comes to
form a special bond with Hitomi once she gets to know the real her, a bond that becomes crucial in
the upcoming war of the planet...
 Volken Fanel (Top)
Age: 25
Kingdom Served: Zaibach
Guymelef piloted: None
Intro: Folken Fanel, formerly prince of Fanelia and brother of Van Fanel, is now a loyal
officer of the Zaibach Empire. Ten years ago from the present day, Vulkan was forced to take the
standard Fanelian ritual in becoming King: to slay one of the Dragon’s surrounding the Kingdom,
despite him not being too fond of the idea. In the process of the ferocious battle, Folken lost his
arm but strange as it was, the Dragon did not slay him. To not slay the Dragon but to still live
is an act of cowardice by the laws of Fanelia, and so Volkan fled the land of his Kingdom and was
taken in by that of the Zaibach Empire. Volkan believed that Donkirk’s views upon life would
lead to peace within the world of Gaia and thus followed them loyally, bringing treasury to his name,
but will Volkan one day realise that he is merely being deceived to something more sinister then
anything in the history of the planet he loves so much?
 Dilandau Albatou (Top)
Age: 15
Kingdom Served: Zaibach Empire
Guymelef piloted: Red Oreades
Intro: Commander of Zaibach’s elite Dragon Slayers and perhaps the most talented and
skilled Guymelef pilot of the whole Zaibach Empire, Dilandau truly is the meaning of the word
“evil”. Although only a teenager, Dilandau is in love with the concept of war and enjoys
carrying out the bloody tasks of the Zaibach Empire, going as far as to defy orders in order to
inflict more pain upon his enemy. His actions are always unpredictable and his decisions extremely
rash, but the reason behind his behaviour and attitude towards war is currently unknown. However,
at times it does seem that Dilandau is somewhat possessed, that the way he thinks, act and behaves
is not his natural self, but who or what else could he possibly be? Perhaps his past and true nature
is linked to the opposite of what he is fighting for, and perhaps his true friends are those he
views as his mortal enemies..
 Millerna Aston (Top)
Age: 16
Kingdom Served: Asturia
Guymelef piloted: None
Intro: Milerna is the 3rd daughter to the king of Asturia, and is therefore the youngest
Princess of Asturia. As Milerna meets Allen again, she chooses to follow him in his quest with the
others in preventing the Zaibach Empire succeed in fulfilling their evil goal. She is well versed in
Medicine and has always wanted to spend her life helping others, and therefore acts as the matron of
the crew. Although only fond of Allen at first, Milerna grows to have a special bond with Van,
Hitomi and Merle, and becomes vital in the survival of the planet Gaea. Her late sister had once
been frantically in love with Allen, and that same love can be seen in the eyes of Milerna whenever
she lays her eyes upon Allen and the way she is particularly worried about his well being, but
Milerna’s father has never taken a liking to Allen due to them both sharing very different views on
the upcoming war; will that prevent the two from loving one another?
 Dryden Fassa (Top)
Age: 21
Kingdom Served: Asturia
Guymelef piloted: None
Intro: Dryden, the only son of one of the King of Asturia’s close advisers,
famous around the world of Gaia due to his great wealth, and is considered as one of the
most educated scholars within the land. His good looks, intelligence and wealth allow him to have
almost anything he desires in the world, all apart from the one thing he has always longed for:
true love. Due to all his assets, the King of Asturia chose his third daughter, Milerna, to be
engaged to Dryden, despite Milerna’s love being for Allen, not Dryden. Dryden, however, is
and always has been very much in love with Milerna, but his kind nature allows him to accept the
fact that that love doesn’t go both ways. Dryden does all he can for Milerna and her friends,
and is a great asset to the crew due to all of his advantages, which he uses whenever he possibly
can to help Van and the others.
 Jajuka (Top)
Age: 21
Kingdom Served: Zaibach
Guymelef piloted: Blue Oreades
Intro: Despite Jajuka only appearing much later in the series (episode 21), he plays a very
significant role. Perhaps Dilandau’s only true friend on the side of Zaibach, Jajuka has
always looked over him and made sure no harm came to Dilandau. As a child, Jajuka always saw to
Dilandau never being sad or upset, never being hurt or in pain, and the two immediately became
extremely close. After Dilandau lost all of his Dragon Slayer soldiers, Jajuka became his only
subordinate, and a very skilled one at that; he pilots one of the two Oreades Guymelef suits, the
other pilot of the two being Dilandau, and is among one of the finest Guymelef pilots of Gaea.
Although Jajuka does serve the evil Zaibach Empire, he does so only to ensue to safety of Dilandau,
and would rather this pointless war ended immediately. When serving under Dilandau, Jajuka makes
sure that the mysteries of his past are unlocked, which results in many of the mysteries within
Escaflowne to be revealed..
 Naria (Top)
Age: 18
Kingdom Served: Zaibach
Guymelef piloted: Teiring
Intro: Sister to Eriya and extremely loyal to Folken, Naria is of the same race as Merle.
When still children, Naria and Eriya’s parents were killed due to prejudice against their
race, and thus the two were bullied for meaningless reasons until they faced death itself. When in
that position, the sisters were saved by Folken, and throughout their time spent with him, the two
fell deeply in love with the young prince. Just like Jajuka to Dilandau, the two’s serving Zaibach
is due to their loyalty to Folken, and not through their truly believing in the motives of the
Kingdom. Through intense training for several years, the two became extremely skilled in several
forms of combat, their specialty being Guymelef combat. They were both given the unique Geymelef
suit Teiring, a Guymelef specifically designed for high-speed flight and attack missions. After
which, the two presumed their loyalty to Folken, carrying out any task he set them to the best of
their ability, even if it threatened their very own existence..
 Eriya (Top)
Age: 18
Kingdom Served: Zaibach
Guymelef piloted: Teiring
Intro: Sister to Naria and extremely loyal to Folken, Eriya is of the same race as Merle.
When still children, Eriya’s and Naria’s parents were killed due to prejudice against their race,

Intro: Extremely mysterious in all ways possible, Dornkirk is now the leader of the Zaibach
Empire. Although surviving solely on medieval’style life support equipment, Dornkirk’s
beliefs and ambitions still burn brighter than ever before. Ultimately, what he is trying to achieve
by the means of this meaningless war is unknown, and only time shall tell how he is linked to the
past of those trying to save the planet Gaea from total destruction..
